About the Artwork

A Mug Beneath a Red Cloak

A man on a high stool holds a small mug in the Birra Dormisch red cloak poster. A dark tricorn frames his face. The red cloak drops around his knees and spreads out along the lower edge of the scene, just above the tall blue lettering for the Udine brewery.

Artwork and design

Mauzan puts the figure straight in front of the viewer, with the hat, collar and shoes arranged on a central line. The cloak opens to show the stool legs and a pair of buckled shoes. Warm yellow in the mug breaks up the reds, and the blue name supplies a cool counterweight below.

About this advertisement

Italy’s national catalogue identifies the poster with Achille Mauzan and MAGA and dates it to 1924. The costume gives an otherwise simple beer presentation a theatrical air. With little furniture around him, the figure holds the space like an actor on a small stage, with the beer as his only prop.

Rooms and interiors

The rich red looks at home against pale plaster or in a game room with dark timber. Leave some space around the printed border if the cloak is to read as one shape. A low position near a drinks cabinet also makes the small mug and shoe buckles visible.
