About the Artwork

Four Faces and a Line of Glasses

The Carpano Four Faces poster lines up four exaggerated faces along a sloping blue counter. Their eyes and noses overlap in quick succession, while a row of small stemmed glasses follows the same diagonal into the distance.

Artwork and design

Green and yellow show up in hair, skin tones and clothing, beside white and warm brown. Loose black outlines hold the faces apart even where they nearly touch. The large yellow Carpano letters fill the calmest patch of blue at the base.

About this advertisement

The image is signed Mauzan. Its Spanish footer says the vermouth was bottled in Torino, connecting the Italian producer to Spanish-language advertising. The absurd profiles show how much of the sales pitch this design leaves to expression and color.

Rooms and interiors

The lively line of faces works well near a bar or on a dining room wall with strong lighting. Pick one color from the picture for the furnishings and let the others remain accents in the print.
