About the Artwork

Two Waiters Behind Oversized Trays

This Édouard Pernod Waiters Poster gives two red-coated servers enormously wide yellow trays. Small glasses surround a pale decanter and a large dark Pernod bottle, with the waiters' heads and legs visible around the serving surfaces. The black field keeps their comic proportions clear beneath the upper request for un Pernod and the boldly lettered Pontarlier producer name at the base.

Artwork and design

The oval trays create a pair of overlapping curves across the upright image. Pale glass outlines repeat along their edges, while the tall bottle and ribbed decanter introduce stronger vertical shapes. Red coats and small faces supply human accents between the objects, and yellow lettering repeats the tray color above and below the otherwise dark, uncluttered arrangement of the two serving figures.

About this advertisement

The artwork names Édouard Pernod in Pontarlier and places the words un Pernod above the illustrated service. Its central invention is the relationship between the waiters and their oversized trays. Bottles, glasses and decanter make the drinks subject explicit, while repetition and a dramatic change of scale turn a familiar serving scene into a distinctive and humorous advertising image of the brand.

Rooms and interiors

Use the yellow, red and black palette in a dining room with simple furniture or a home bar with a few bright accents. The serving scene can connect with restaurant and waiter-themed prints. A light wall or a generous gap between pictures will keep the overlapping trays and tiny glasses easy to distinguish from the surrounding dark field.
