About the Artwork

Pierrot and the Green Bottle

The Sila mineral water poster catches a white-clad character in a private moment of delight. With his pointed cap tipped forward and his elbows tucked into the folds of his costume, the seated Pierrot holds up a green bottle. The curve of his back and the tilt of the bottle make the gesture easy to read across a room.

Artwork and design

Gold ornament sets off the generous, almost circular shape of the white costume. Look for the little carved faces on the chair arms and the green cushions beneath the figure. Behind the chair, uneven strokes of dark blue soften the black ground while the large ivory Sila lettering anchors the lower edge.

About this advertisement

The original Italian lettering presents Sila as a natural water and uses wording common to period mineral-water advertising. The picture makes its point through theater. A familiar comic costume carries the eye to the bottle, then the large brand name and the smaller line beneath it give the poster the shape of an advertisement.

Rooms and interiors

Hang this print beside dark wood or brass in a café booth, dining alcove or kitchen with deep blue accents. The broad costume and high contrast read from across the room, while a spot at seated eye level makes the chair details and the character’s expression easier to appreciate.
