About the Artwork

A Character Dressed in Grapes

The Chinato Garda poster by Adolphe Bouchet gives its central character a yellow, leafy face and a coat made of blue grapes. He holds a bottle in each hand at shoulder height. Set against red, the labels, fruit and large yellow letters all stand apart clearly, even in the busy middle of the picture.

Artwork and design

The full coat takes up much of the lower half, where highlights on individual grapes create a pattern of small circles. Two straight bottles rise from hands that resemble pale tendrils. The repeated bottle shapes and upturned fingers frame the central face. Heavy, simply spaced letters sit at the top and foot, letting the composition keep its symmetry around the character.

About this advertisement

The Bibliothèque nationale de France catalogues Bouchet’s Chinato Garda poster to 1912. The grape costume ties the figure to the drink through an immediately recognizable ingredient image. Matching bottles flank the character like prizes held up to the viewer, and their labels repeat the broad name across the red ground.

Rooms and interiors

Give this print a clear area above a wine cabinet or in a colorful dining nook. Small accents of blue glass and red enamel will pick up the main colors. The close detail of the grape coat makes the piece especially rewarding on a wall near a table, where viewers have time to study it.
