About the Artwork

A Serving Tray Seen From Above

The Berger 45 Ansieau tray poster looks directly down on a server carrying a round tray. A Berger bottle and a clear glass sit within its rim. The top of the server’s head, the black jacket and a white towel turn the ordinary act of carrying a drink into an unfamiliar view.

Artwork and design

The round head repeats the curve of the tray at a different scale. The arms wrap around both sides and give the picture a directional sweep. Hard black shadows cut across yellow, with cool gray under the glass and amber in the bottle. Heavy lettering at the foot balances the odd angle of the scene.

About this advertisement

Roland Ansieau’s signed design gives Berger 45 and Type Marseillais large, simple lines. From above, the bottle cap and label remain visible among the dark shadows. That unusual viewpoint keeps the name and the act of service in view together, with the yellow ground doing much of the work of the setting.

Rooms and interiors

Set it over a bar cart or on a pale dining wall with black accents. The yellow works as a single strong color near stainless steel or white tile. Give the tray enough space above and to the side so the overhead view is easy to read.
