About the Artwork

A Flying Toast From Olympia

The Olympia flying toast beer poster pictures a woman riding a large bottle diagonally through a wash of blue. She steadies herself in flowing white drapery and lifts a glass high enough for the foam to break the outline. A thin border of trailing leaves frames the flight on a warm paper ground.

Artwork and design

The tilted bottle provides the strongest straight line in the image. Light folds of fabric cross it and break into softer curves, giving the impression of a gust. There is a pause between the figure and the red Olympia lettering, so the words and the floating pose can each be seen clearly.

About this advertisement

The artwork credits the Capital Brewing Company in Olympia, Washington. Tumwater’s historic district record traces the company’s first Olympia beer to 1896 and its early brewery to the lower falls. The advertisement sets that brewery credit below a fanciful figure, giving the local beer a character as distinctive as its lettering.

Rooms and interiors

Hang the piece near the end of a warm wood counter or in a room with cream walls and muted green trim. The border looks at home near a leafy plant, and the amber beer gives a subtle link to brass or honey-colored wood. Leave enough space for the whole frame of vines.
