About the Artwork

A Tray Offered to a Cavalier

The Neufchâteau cavalier beer poster shows a mounted traveler leaning toward a drink held up by a server. His bright red cape fills the space above the dark horse, and the little glass is set against an open field of yellow. Rooftops in the distance give the encounter the feel of a welcome at the edge of town.

Artwork and design

The artist places the horse’s dark head between the two figures and angles the rider’s hand out toward the foam. Smaller red shapes in the server’s shoes and the far rooftops extend the color of the cloak. The green ground brings the illustration down to the large Neufchâteau name in white.

About this advertisement

This design bears Georges Ripart’s signature and advertises the beers of Neufchâteau in the Vosges. The presentation of the glass is the moment on which the picture turns. A sense of place comes through the brewery name and the landscape together, with the costume giving the scene a playful historical character.

Rooms and interiors

Let the yellow sky brighten a room with green tile or dark wood. The scene fits a dining area with horse prints or French travel art, especially above a low cabinet where the rider and little glass can be seen at once. A warm white wall softens the stronger red and green.
