About the Artwork

A Loop of Color Around an Acrobat

The Bitter Canetta white acrobat poster shows a pale figure caught in a turn, with a bottle raised over one shoulder. A ribbon shoots from its neck and winds around the outstretched limbs. Against black, the white costume looks as light as the bands of red and yellow circling it.

Artwork and design

Fine curves in the background mark the movement without filling the dark field. The figure bends in a direction different from the broadest loop, leaving open gaps between the body and the ribbon. The large yellow letters at the bottom catch the last warm color as the loop comes to a point.

About this advertisement

The Museo Nazionale Collezione Salce records a Bitter Canetta design with a gymnast and a ribbon of liquor and attributes it to Franco Aloy. The Milan product name is the only large block of lettering in this composition. The bright loop and folded figure give the bottle an active part in the scene.

Rooms and interiors

The dark field and clean yellow type make the print a good fit for a modern lounge or a drinks cabinet with brass hardware. Hang it on a plain surface where the full loop remains visible. A little warm light will give the ivory figure definition without losing the darker rings behind it.
