About the Artwork

An Angel Serves at a Café Table

The St. Raphaël angel café poster turns a small café table into a scene with wings and clouds. A white-robed figure leans down to pour for a gentleman in a top hat. A dog watches from the ground as little winged faces descend through the open blue above.

Artwork and design

The angel’s long white robe and the guest’s dark suit set up a light and dark rhythm around the round table. The dog and the floating faces give the eye smaller shapes to find. A red panel with white letters closes the scene at the foot.

About this advertisement

A surviving lithograph documented by Galerie Elbé credits H. Gerbault and the printer Carlos Courmont. The design brings St. Raphaël’s name into the scene through the winged server. The ordinary table and chair give the supernatural figures a café setting, which is part of the print’s visual humor.

Rooms and interiors

This blue and red composition suits a dining nook, a café-inspired kitchen or a home bar with pale walls. Hang it where the small dog and the figures overhead can be seen at eye level. An understated frame leaves the strong red panel room to read.
