About the Artwork

A yellow dancer with a discreet black title

The Vin Mariani dancer poster gives most of the picture to a floating figure in pale yellow. She pours from a small bottle into a glass held at arm’s length. A tall yellow headpiece and flowers frame her face, while one leg lifts behind the swirling skirt.

Artwork and design

Broad dark and gray strokes gather above the dancer, increasing the lightness of her costume. A faint background figure raises a glass at the left. Small black Vin Mariani lettering sits toward the lower right, leaving much more open space than the version with the large red title and English advertising panel.

About this design

Jules Chéret created the central Vin Mariani design in 1894, and it survives in several lettering states. This composition emphasizes the illustration and a short product title. The historical tonic-wine advertisement shows Chéret’s skill at suggesting movement through angled limbs, loosely drawn fabric, delicate outlines and bright color set against energetic shadow.

Rooms and interiors

Choose it for a sitting room, dining area or gallery of French figurative prints. Cream walls and yellow textiles can echo the light palette. Its quieter typography works beside more text-heavy posters, allowing a varied group to share a common Belle Époque theme without repeating the same visual emphasis.
